Hawkes Bay Wine
The first vines were planted here in the 1850s but it was not until the 1940s that the wine industry began to flourish. Hawkes Bay built its reputation for quality on red wine blends, similar to those made in Bordeaux. Like Bordeaux it has a maritime climate and gravelly soils, known here as Gimblett Gravels. Merlot is the most planted grape in the region with other varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Malbec.
